Research Tradecraft for PSYOP Environments

Course Overview

This five-day course is designed to close the critical training gap left by current institutional instruction for junior PSYOP Soldiers. While existing training programs offer baseline exposure to open-source platforms, this course addresses the Tier Zero need by equipping Soldiers with operationally relevant research practices that support decision-making, enable narrative development, and inform strategic influence planning.

The first two days focus on the analytical tradecraft of open-source research (OSR) and how to develop a disciplined approach to online discovery without dependency on secure digital personas or managed environments. The final three days provide applied data literacy instruction, leveraging real-world exercises that teach participants how to clean, structure, interpret, and communicate findings from public datasets using practical tools.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Apply structured research methodologies to locate, assess, and exploit online content relevant to PSYOP operations.

  • Understand how to evaluate digital content (e.g., social media, grey literature, multimedia) for operational relevance and decision support.

  • Recognize the difference between research to support mission operations vs. analytical production.

  • Develop skills in identifying data quality, cleaning raw data, and preparing it for interpretation.

  • Translate findings into briefing-ready outputs that inform Command decisions.

This Training Directly Enhances Mission Readiness

Implementing a structured research framework reduces errors, develops best practices, and establishes accountability.

REducing time loss by instilling efficient, repeatable research methods that keep analysts aligned with mission objectives.

Enabling participants to deliver brief-ready findings that directly supports faster, more informed command decisions.
